Orthodox samayal for every occasion that matters.
From the Muhurtha Sapadu of a Kalyaanam to the quiet first meal of a Graha Pravesham — mysri prepares every dish the orthodox way. No onion. No garlic. 100% pure vegetarian. The way it has always been done.
Brahmin cooks.Decades of mastery.
Every mysri cook is a Brahmin cook. Some are in their fifties. Some are in their sixties. A few have been doing this for longer than most people can remember — cooking authentic Tamil Brahmin samayal for Iyer and Iyengar weddings and family functions across Chennai.
Before anyone enters the kitchen, the chappals come off at the door. This is not a rule that was written down. It is simply understood — the kitchen is where the food is prepared for a sacred occasion. That standard begins here, before the first fire is lit.
One glance at the kuzhambu. One inhale. And he will tell you exactly what is missing — before you have tasted it.
Their hands carry the knowledge. The wrinkled fingers that have ground, stirred, shaped, and tasted across many many Brahmin weddings and family functions — in Chennai and beyond. That experience cannot be taught in a kitchen course. It is earned, slowly, over a lifetime of orthodox samayal.

"A meal prepared without onion or garlic is not a restriction — it is a devotion."
Every dish at mysri begins not with a recipe card, but with an understanding of the occasion. Whether it is the Muhurtham Saatham of an Iyer wedding or the careful simplicity of an Upanayanam breakfast, the menu is drawn from tradition.
We serve Iyer and Iyengar families with full knowledge of the distinctions between each tradition. The same dishes are not simply replicated — they are prepared as each community has always prepared them.
A meal your guests will carry home with them.
There is a particular thing that happens at a mysri vazha ilai. Your guests finish eating. They wash their hands. They sit back. And then — a few minutes later, almost without realising it — they bring their fingers to their nose.
That is the Kadamba Sambar. Ground fresh that morning, tempered in sesame oil, finished in a sequence that no one has written down because it was never necessary to write it down. The aroma does not leave quickly. It was not meant to.
The rice arrives on a banana leaf placed in the correct order — broad end facing left, the way it has always been done. The Paruppu arrives first: the mood-setter, finished with a cube of ghee that melts before you can put the leaf down.
The More Kuzhambu is cool and silken where the Sambar was deep and smoky. The Kootu gives texture. The Poriyal disappears first — it always does. The pickle arrives precisely, because it is a punctuation mark, not a main event.
Somewhere in the middle of all of this, a guest will stop. Not to say anything. Just to eat more slowly. To pay attention. Because the food is asking for it.
The sweets arrive last. The Payasam is the exhale. The Vadai was made this morning. The Bakshanam was prepared yesterday, rested overnight, and tastes exactly as it should. When the meal is done, the leaf will be folded — not immediately, because there is no rush. The fold itself is the signal: this was a good meal.
This is what mysri prepares — for Iyer weddings, Iyengar weddings, Upanayanam, Seemantham, Graha Pravesham and every Brahmin family function in Chennai. No onion. No garlic. 100% pure vegetarian orthodox samayal. The way it has always been done.
